Remembering

Today is the three year anniversary of a world that none of us wanted to live into, a world changed forever again by a crazed gunman, shattering twelve lives, taking them away forever, shattering other lives, other lifetimes, waiting to be born into, a world changed forever, a world none of us wanted to live into.

Remembering the lives of those we lost on this awful day, on this awful moment in our lives.

Alex Sullivan, Alex Teves, John Larimer, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, Jessica Redfield, Micayla Medek, AJ Boik, Jesse Childress, Matt Mcquinn, Jonn Blunk, Rebecca Wingo and Gordon Cowden.

"What better honor in this lifetime to be surrounded by people who make you constantly think and say, "My God, I want to learn how to love you so well.

Gordon Cowden surrounded by his family

Turn your whole life into a quest to be good to those people.  Like make your whole life into a quest to figure out how to show up for them.  At airports.  On birthdays.  On days where you know there is a decision lurking around the corner and they're scared and wondering.  Those good people are your people--fight for them."~Hannah Brencher

Aurora, one year later

One year ago today, those of us living in Aurora Colorado work up to find the community we live in changed forever.  The anguish once again too familiar and this time it was so close to home.

Twelve people lost their lives that night because they bought a ticket and fate brought them to the wrong theater where a lunatic lay in wait.

Let us forever remember the 12 lives that were lost that night at Century theater.

My son Adam could have been in the theater that night.  For some reason he decided to attend the premier of the Batman movie with a different group of friends, 15 miles from his home rather than Century 16 which was 2 miles from home.  I shudder every time I think about that.  Was it a nudge from his guardian angel that steered him away from Century 16 that night?

In the year that has passed since that horrible night what has changed in the community, in our country?

The Century 16 theater reopened in November.  People didn't stop going to the movies.

We watched in horror of another mass shooting in Newton, Connecticut where twenty-six lives were lost at an elementary school.

Again the politicians stepped forward for a moment to capitalize on this tragedy only to recede quickly into the woodwork,  lacking the courage to take a stand. The NRA said the answer to the problem was to have more guns.

No substantive changes have been made and I fear that none ever will.  It is a complex problem and doing nothing leaves an open invitation for another mass shooting to occur.

The shooter has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.  It took an entire year to get to this point.

For me, it took a mass shooting to occur a mile or so from where I raised my family to get me to donate blood for the first time in my life.  I now go on a regular basis, every 6 weeks.  It is such a simple thing to do.  Everyone can do it and I encourage anyone that is reading this to find your local blood bank and become a blood donor.  You can do something meaningful for you community every six weeks.

My son and his co-host went on the air one year ago tonight on Mile High Sports and held an open forum about the shootings to begin the healing process.  There was no talk about sports that night.

Denver Sports Nation partnered with 5280 Shirt Shop to raise money for victims and families of the Aurora shooting.

I met one of the survivors, Jasmine Kennedy at a fund raiser at a local bowling alley. Her leg had been shattered by a bullet and she faced a long road of rehabilitation. Undeterred she bowled that day from a wheelchair, smiling, laughing and providing inspiration to her community with her positive attitude.

Jasmine Kennedy, Thumbs Up!

Eugene Han and Kristin Davis were both in the theater during the shooting and decided to get married today as a way of moving forward, claiming a better day.

So a year later our community is still healing.  We watch and wait and hope there will not be another senseless tragedy in any community.

Hey Santa

Hey Santa

Hey Santa, can you bring me something good?

I thought I should get my request in early as I have a huge task for you and it might take you some extra time to get it all done, some extra planning on your part.

You see we have a big problem in our country.  We have too many guns that are falling into the hands of the wrong people.  The NRA thinks the answer is to have more guns, to put armed guards into our schools.

Where else would we have to put armed guards?  Movie theaters, shopping malls, the grocery store.  This can't be the answer. I guess this could be a form of job creation.  How many new jobs could that create? I shudder at the thought where this could take us.

I read that our country has over 300 millions guns in our homes.  300 million guns!  How many of those are weapons of mass destruction.  Weapons that belong only in the hands of  the military or police officers.

We lost too many people this last year in the matter of minutes because people had access to these weapons.  Twelve people were killed at a movie theater where the police were on site in less than 90 seconds.  Too late and 58 others were wounded in the carnage.

The politicians all echoed that the time was not right to have a serious conversation about guns.  They lamented that nothing could be done to prevent this from happening.  We looked away and hoped it wouldn't happen again.   Shameful...

There was something worse waiting to happen.  President Obama described the shootings at Sandy Hook elementary as the worst day in his Presidency.  The worst day of his Presidency?  What about the parents who dropped their children off at school that morning, trusting they would be safe.  Never to hug them again, to tuck them into bed at night.   20 children, and 6 teachers in a matter of minutes.  The killer had enough ammunition to kill every person in the school.  When the police arrived as cowards do, he turned the gun on himself.

So here is my request.  Since the government says nothing can be done and the loons at the NRA think the answer is to have more guns I am asking for your help to solve this problem.   So when you come down all the chimney's next Christmas eve, can you please remove all of the assault weapons.  We don't need these in our homes for protection, for hunting.  We don't need them in our world.

I know you don't every want anything like this to happen again.  Since we can't do anything about it, maybe you can.

Hey Santa.
Hey Santa, can you bring me something good?
A world without assault weapons.

Will you do this for Jasmine?

Thumbs up!
I met Jasmine at a fundraiser at a bowling alley that she used to work at to benefit the families of the Aurora theater shootings.  Jasmine had been shot in the leg.  Her tibia was fractured and has a long road of recovery facing her.  Jasmine is an avid bowler and she was bowling in a wheel chair the day I met her.  If you didn't bring this to her this last Christmas, please give her the gift of being able to bowl again and walk without pain.   Jasmine is one of the 58 survivors from that horrible night.

Will you do this for the children and the teachers at Santa Hook Elementary, for all of the friends and families whose hearts are broken?

Grace Audrey McDonnell, Age 7
Half a world away, the news about the shootings in Connecticut shook a town in Indonesia.  These are not the stories we want to tell and they are so important so I hope you will find the time to read Katie's story.

So Santa, how about it?  I haven't asked for anything in a long time and I have been good.  Really, I promise.

How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus, if we had nothing to believe in, no hope to hold onto. It would be as dreary as if there were no children like Grace and Charlotte, Daniel and Olivia, Josephine and Ana., Daniel and  Madeline, Catherine and Chase, Jesse and James, Emilie and Jack, Noah and Caroline, Jessica and Avielle, Benjamin and Allison. No laughter to lift our hearts, no smiles to gladden our lives.

We Are Aurora

Hey twitter! You get it first! We Are Aurora tribute t-shirt!

Well Twitter got the breaking news about the Aurora tribute t-shirt from 5280 Shirt Shop.  If you read this and are on Twitter, please help spread the news.  I would love to see this go viral.  Social media can be so powerful.  Please do what you can to help raise awareness about this.

Please visit 5280 shirt shop by clicking here and place your order for your own We Are Aurora t-shirt. I already ordered a shirt for myself and for my wife, Sue.

100% of the profits for each shirt sold will be donated to the families and survivors of the Aurora shootings last week.

Last Friday my son Adam and his co-host Dario hosted a poignant show on Mile High Sports where there was no conversation about sports.  It was an open forum for people to call in and talk about the shootings at the Century 16 theater in Aurora last week.

Adam and Dario both grew up in Aurora and within a mile of the theater and they both felt the urgency to do something to contribute to the healing in the community, to help the families and everyone that has been touched by this horrific tragedy.

They partnered with James Hernandez the owner of 5280 Shirt Shop and Just Incredible Design to create the Aurora tribute shirt.  5280 Shirt Shop is Dario's and Adam's first sponsor of their radio show, Denver Sports Nation.

Adam and Dario are also working on another fundraiser where many other radio talk show hosts and their fans  will be joining Denver Sports Nation to attend a showing of the Dark Knight rises where we take our community back, unafraid and united in our support.

We are Aurora!

The Stories we have to tell

These are the lives we have to learn about, read about so we can tell their stories.

As time passes the lives that were lost at the Century 16 theater's will fade from our memories.

Books will be written about the shooter, everyone will have an opinion.

Gun control, assault weapons.  What was the founding father's intent for the second amendment?  The debate will rage on and lives will be lost again to assault weapons.

Senator Romney and Governor Hickenlooper both said that stricter gun laws would not have made a difference.  The outcome would have been the same.  There is no way to know if that is the true.  They do not know that to be true.   I think that is an outrageous statement.  Why bother?  Do nothing and hope for the best. Our elected officials in action.

Lets do everything we can to keep the memories alive of those that were lost on July 20.

Read their stories, learn about their lives.  Read them, share their stories over and over again.

Every person that died deserves to have their stories told by the media, by us.  Every life matters.

Please read the story about Alex Sullivan by clicking the link here.  Talk to your spouse, your children, your friends about Alex.  Share his life.

I will post something every year on the anniversary date of the shootings just as I do on April 20 to remember Columbine.  I will never mention the shooter of either of these events by their name.

Please take the time to learn about the people that we lost by clicking the link here.  Our world is worse now without them.

My son, Adam went to high school with Micayla Medek.   Please take the time to read about Micayla.

When the conversation moves to the shooter, lets stop and say, "Let me tell you something about Alex Sullivan, Alex Teves, John Larimer, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, Jessica Redfield, Micayla Medek, AJ Boik, Jesse Childress, Matt Mcquinn, Jonn Blunk, Rebecca Wingo and Gordon Cowden.  Let me tell you about their lives."

It is our honor and our sacred duty to share their stories.
